Student Parking Lot

Progress has been made on the clean up student parking lot. Most of the weeds have been removed by APS Maintenance and Operations. However, we still have a long way to go with debris, trash, and landscaping. Problems with theft in the student parking lot continue. I would like to ask everyone in the community to be vigilant and report and suspicious activity.

nex+Gen Robotics Team Wins Award at 2016 International Roborave

On Saturday, May 6th & 7th, four nex+Gen Griffin Robotics teams attended the 2016 International Roborave at the Albuquerque Convention Center.  There were teams representing China, Canada, Japan, Zambia, Turkmenistan, Czechoslovakia, Columbia, Mexico as well as five  states in the United States. The teams had spent the second semester of class preparing for four different chosen categories: Firefighting, A-MAZE-ing Challenge, Aerial Challenge and Robotovate.

While all teams experienced some level of success, one team was chosen and selected by the votes of all attending Roborave to be outstanding in their area of competition.  Sam Bair, Brianna Martin, Ohad Nir, and Jordan Silva, the members of the team “Golden Griffins,” won 5th Place in Roborave Robotovate and a cash prize of $500.00.  There were over 25 other teams competing in this category.

In front of Room 102 this week are the display materials and the artificial muscle arm created for the competition.  Conceptually, these four formed a mock company within Griffin Robotics called “Golden Griffins.”  They researched, and replicated a new use of nylon fishing line toward the benefit of those with the need for artificial limbs.  They created an informative website along with a QR code that is still active and worth visiting.  Their work and progress was recognized as outstanding by the fifth highest number of votes from all who attended.

Take some time to stop by see their arm and the materials developed to promote it.  Visit the website and see what nex+Gen students can do using their best efforts and the tools that nex+Gen gives students to show their capacity to create and innovate.

Congratulations Sam, Brianna, Ohad,& Jordan, and all Griffin Robotics Roborave Teams for a job well done!!  You are all international winners!

A Special Letter from Dr. Stanton

Dear nex+Gen Community,

I want to tell you that after careful consideration and planning, I intend to retire from APS and my job as your School Principal effective July 1st.  I have been honored and very blessed to have this opportunity to be the founding principal of nex+Gen Academy.  For over 6 1/2 years, I have given my best to lead the design, implementation, and daily success of our innovative school. I have been proud of the national recognition of our school as a best practice of 1 to 1 technology by Dell and Intel, a national demonstration site and exemplary school in the New Tech Network. I have been even more proud of our rise to one of the top performing schools in PED rankings of high schools in New Mexico. More than that, I love that we have become a truly unique community of learners, from our professional staff and excellent teachers, to our student Learners that demonstrate every day in so many ways core values that we are all proud of while learning in our special project based learning environment far more than the core standards. I am so proud to have been a part of nex+Gen Academy. The demands of school principal at nex+Gen along with my family health issues and other considerations have brought me to this decision as well. I am so fortunate to be in this position to retire from full time school leadership and the demands and expectations of running the school, especially one as excellent as nex+Gen. In addition, other opportunities have been presented to me to serve education communities across NM in some special ways and not requiring the large time and attention of school leadership. I plan to continue working in New Mexico and across the U.S. bringing innovation and success to a wider scope of schools and communities.

Again, please accept my deepest appreciation for your support and understanding as our school community makes this transition. Please be assured our teachers and teacher leadership are in terrific shape. Our school programs are going to be even better next School Year, and APS is committed to continuing support of our unique school of choice. I do intend to work up to June 30th and do all I can to help with a smooth transition in leadership for nex+Gen Academy.

APS Bell Schedule for School Year 2015 - 2016

Please note, as a School of Choice focused on wall to wall project and problem based learning, nex+Gen Academy prefers keeping with the current schedule.

March 11, 2015

To: High School Students, Parents & Staff

From: Todd Resch, APS associate superintendent for high schools

RE: High school bell schedules for 2015-16

Albuquerque Public Schools is considering changing the bell schedule for its 13 comprehensive high schools in 2015-16, and we’d like to know what you think. We’ve put together an online survey that summarizes the current schedule and two proposed schedules. Please take a look at each of these; then choose the one you like best.

The survey deadline is midnight Sunday, March 15.

The primary reason for looking at a schedule change is to improve the academic success and graduation rate of our students. Under both proposed schedules, teachers would see their students more often than they do now, and most classes would be smaller. This also is a way to help cut costs with the least impact to students.

We want to assure you that students would not lose electives under the two proposed schedules, and they still would have intervention, enrichment and credit-recovery opportunities. All three schedules offer seven classes a week, allowing students to earn up to 28 credits in four years; they need 25 to graduate.

Zero hour classes would continue to be offered in the two proposed schedules as they are now.

Thanks for taking the time to review the schedules and complete the survey. We value your input.

Plan to Attend our Senior Project Presentations April 9th starting at 6pm

One of the unique characteristics of nex+Gen is our requirement that Seniors engage in a year-long project of their own choosing. The project can be about almost anything, but it has some specific requirements: it must have an academic component, including a research paper; a product of some sort must emerge from it; students must seek out and find an adult mentor for feedback and guidance; students must present their journey at the end of the year.

For the last requirement of a presentation, we wish to elevate student performance, and legitimize their work by having them present not to their teachers, but to community members like you, who can objectively assess the merit of the work.

The event will be Thursday evening, April 9, from 5:30 to 8 pm.

We still have a few openings for folks wanting to help with assessment of the Projects. Please contact Dr. Stanton if you are interested: michael.stanton@nexgenacademy.com

How should we make up for the snow day?

All Albuquerque Public Schools were closed due to weather on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015. In order to complete the required number of instructional hours required by the state, students must make up the time missed because of the Snow Day.

To make up this time, the district has come up with two proposals.
For High School students:
Option 1: Parent/teacher conferences currently scheduled for all-day March 19 & 20, could be re-scheduled for just one day, March 20. Students would come to school for a regular instructional day on March 19, and any conferences scheduled for March 19 would be held either before or after school.
Option 2: Students could come to school on May 26, the day after the Memorial Day holiday, to make up the time missed on Feb. 27.

To indicate your preference go to the APS website at: http://www.aps.edu/students-parents/proposals-for-making-up-snow-day

Mock Trial Team makes a great showing at State Competition this past weekend.

The nex+Gen Academy mock trial team placed 21st out of 28 teams at the regional competition, winning one trial and losing three.  In the first round, the team faced the three-time national champion team, Albuquerque Academy.  The loss to Albuquerque Academy was followed by a close loss to Amy Biehl, a victory against the top team from Las Cruces High School and another close loss to Santa Fe High School. Team members included Nicole Witter, Sam Bair, Caleb Bock, Rios Fernandez, Orion Nicol, Jackson Pike and Lauren Soherr.  This was a strong outcome for a first-year team with six freshmen participants.  Nicole Witter, Sam Bair, Orion Nicol, Jackson Pike, and Lauren Soherr received awards for best advocate and/or best witness in individual trials

nex+Gen plans "Dress Rehearsal" Monday, Feb 23rd, for PARCC testing

I’m sure you are aware by now of the new high stakes testing on standards called PARCC. These tests in Math and English Language Arts replace the older Standards Based Assessment or SBA. The first parts of the tests will start the week of March 3rd. Please see our calendar on our website for more details. We are doing a dress rehearsal of PARCC because it is so very different than what we have done in the past. We need your help. Please have your student bring their headphone or earbud to school this Monday and again when we test for the audio/video parts of the test.

nex+Gen Academy's First 4-Year Cohort Graduation Rate Announced

nex+Gen Academy's Graduation Rate, 69.3%, is 7 percentage points above the number for all of Albuquerque Public Schools, including its charter schools. This is a rise of 6 Points over last year's figure, making nex+Gen Academy one of only 2 schools to see an increase in their graduation rate over the previous year.

Although this does not represent our ultimate goal in 4 year graduation rate for nex+Gen, it does show our school going in the right direction. Our growth and development which is far above the APS and State average in graduation rates, and test scores is a tribute to the incredible, professional teachers at nex+Gen. Their implementation of our unique blend of project and problem based, student centered teaching and learning with smart use of technology and integration of core values and enduring skills development is at the core of our success.

Thanks nex+Gen Community for supporting our Blood Drive Friday. See message below:

Wow! You did it again! With you and your school's dedication and hard work, it truly paid off at your blood drive yesterday. Your school donated a total of 23 life saving units which has the potential to 69 patients.  Thank you!

As the state’s only non-profit community blood provider, 44 hospitals rely on United Blood Services to have blood readily available for their patients’ needs. Heroes like you all help us reach out to the community to collect nearly 60% of the state’s blood supply, so you can see why your support is so vital. Attached is an example of just one of many recipient’s story that I would like to share with you, your students and your blood donors

We still have about 12 more open appointment slots if you can think of anyone that would like to donate. If we are one of the top 10% of schools in NM that increase their donations by 30%, we could win $500 for our school. We need at least 33 donations to do this. Right now we have 28 donors signed up. See or email Mr. Sisneros for more information or to sign up.

nex+Gen Seniors will teach our 9th and 10th graders in a unique Trip to Valle do Oro

The seniors at nexgen have been working with the Fish and Wildlife Service to help in the development of the Valle de Oro National Wildlife refuge.   They have tested water, studied water law, measured biodiversity, counted birds, helped to dig a ground water well, and contributed to national databases with their data.    On Nov 21, seniors will host a day of learning for the nex+Gen freshmen and sophomores at the Valle - a group of 230 students - sharing the knowledge they've gained, and giving the underclassmen a preview of the work they might do when they become seniors, and helping them to value the extraordinary action New Mexico has taken in creating this refuge.

PSAT Test for Sophomores and Juniors being held October 15th

Your son or daughter will be taking the PSAT-National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This is a vital step on the path to college success. It is a standardized test sponsored by the College Board, the same folks that write the SAT and ACT tests. Students are preparing for this in their Friday Advisory programs and we will use the results when we get them back in December to better form pathways and activities to help your student better prepare for post high school plans. The cost for Sophomores is covered by the State of NM. For juniors we need to collect $14; Mrs. Davis will be in charge of that.  This is important for us because 11th-grade students can qualify for scholarships and recognition, while sophomores will benefit from early feedback on their skills. Follow the link below for more details.

First 6 week grading period ends September 23rd

Hard to believe, but today marks the end of our first 6 week grading period. You need to know that this report is considered more of a progress report, a snapshot of student assessment of their work and learning up to this time of the year. The grade that goes into the permanent transcript is the one earned before Winter Break. Grades will accumulate over the course of the semester as more activities, tests, and projects are completed and averaged in. Expect to see the 6 week report card sent home with your son or daughter early next week.  I have posted the materials on our website under the Parent Tab from my Echo Parent Workshop last week. You are an important part of your learner’s success when you are connected in Echo to projects, activities, and grades to better support your student. Your login and password to Echo are your email address. Your password will be nexgen15. You can always change that after you log in. As always, if you do have questions or concerns, please call 878-6418 or email me at Michael.stanton@nexgenacademy.com.

Mock Trial Club Starts

Mock trial is an innovative, hands-on experience in the law for high school students of all ages and abilities. Every year hundreds of New Mexico teenagers and their teacher advisors and attorney coaches spend the better part of the school year researching, studying and preparing a hypothetical courtroom trial involving issues that are important and interesting to young people.

In February, the teams try their cases before judges and panels of jurors in courtrooms in Albuquerque and Las Cruces. In March, the top teams advance to state finals in Albuquerque, with the winner going on to represent the state at the national championship, held each year in a different US city.

NEXGEN IS RECRUITING FOR A MOCK TRIAL TEAM. GRADES 9-12 WELCOME. THERE IS A SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR SENIORS WHO PARTICIPATE. OUR FIRST MEETING IS TUES., SEPT. 23 FROM 2:30-3:30 PM IN ROOM 102. SEE MRS. REECE IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.

Echo & Social Media Parent Workshops this Wednesday

Be sure to attend our Echo & Social Media Parent Workshops this Wednesday evening starting at 6pm. I am sorry if I caused any confusion with my announcement last week. But the Workshop is Wednesday – not Tuesday – starting at 6pm. Please bring  your student  and his or her laptop for this. I have two workshops planned. One for our family members just starting to know Echo, and others that have had some experience and want to learn more or get questions answered on how to use Echo more effectively. The goal is for you to be able to know and use this online tool that keeps up with your child’s grades, homework, projects, activities, school announcements, parent Goal teams and more. Our NG Community Organization Literacy Goal Team is putting on a workshop on resources to help parents understand, support, and talk to their child about safe use of technology. Please call if you have any questions.

Announcing the Grand Opening of the nex+Gen Library!

We have always had a state-of-the-art virtual non-fiction library.  Now, after 4 years, we have a designated place to house a physical library with fiction and non-fiction books and a library website for announcements. Ms. Violeta Djordjevic, our National Board Certified Facilitator for students of the gifted and others with special needs is taking on the extra responsibility of running our library. We already have one terrific student aid, Melinda Cliborn, and can use another.

Here are a few guidelines for our Library. Books that have an inventory sticker need to be checked out.  Please make sure that before you take a book from our library shelf you check with me.  Ms. Djordjevic will be available from 7:10-7:25 every morning in the southwest balcony area. Every Friday, the Nex+Gen Library will be open for “Lunch with the Book”.  Since we have limited seating in the southwest balcony area, she will allow only 25 learners to stay and enjoy the quiet reading time with her.  First come, first served!

Please come and visit the “Red Box” which will be an honors system for check-out.  You may take a book at any time and bring a book for other learners to read.  You do not need to check the book out from the Library. These books are not inventoried by APS, but rather donations of staff and families of nex+Gen.  Spread the love of reading; bring a gently used book to share.

Every month we will have a Library theme and an event.  September is the “Banned Books Month”.  Nationally, Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read.  We will have plenty of books for you to choose on our library shelf that were censored in the past.  Starting Monday, September 4th, you may come to take a photo in the library with your “banned book”.  After school library events will be announced and posted on our website, so keep checking for information.

Looking forward to seeing you checking out books, reading and developing great experiences.

Parents, here is a review of our Tardy Policy

We appreciate all of our families traveling across town to bring your student to our school. Remember, if you drop your student off be sure to do so in the North Parking Lot off of San Mateo Lane. Our school is open in the morning by 6:30am. Breakfast is served at 7am to 7:25.

Our Practice:

  • Students who are late for the first class of the day must sign in at the front desk when they arrive.  They will receive a pink ticket that provides for their entry into class from Mrs. Harvey, our receptionist.
  • On the 3rd tardy of the semester, a parent call will be made. Passport will be taken and an entry made into Behavior Tracker.
  • On the 4th tardy of the semester, another Behavior Tracker and Lunchtime Community Service will be assigned for one day.
  • On the 5th tardy of the semester, a parent conference will be held.
  • Continued lateness will lead to continued Community Service (one duty for one tardy)

The full policy can be found HERE on our website.

nex+Gen Learners Surpass State Averages of College Readiness on ACT

The recent ACT Profile report of the Class or 2014 shows our students also scored at or above the National Average in three out of five areas. nex+Gen had 92% of our Senior Class take the assessment, a curriculum-based measure of College Readiness and is used for entrance into most colleges around the country including UNM, NMSU, and NM Tech. Our students were tested on academic achievement in English, math, reading, and science.

62% of our student tested last year scored well enough to show they will have a 75% or better chance of obtaining a C or better in College English Composition. 43% of our student have 75% or better chance of obtaining a C or better in College Algebra - both at the National Averages. 21 of our students (45% of our 47 students tested) met all 4 ACT benchmark scores for college readiness.

We still have more work to do this year and every year to grow and improve our numbers of successful, college ready students. to that end, nex+Gen Academy is piloting for New Tech Network and Stanford University College Readiness Assessments (CRAs) and Individual Assessments of Knowledge Tasks across all subjects and grades in our school. Look for more details in the weeks to come.

Student Testing

Testing requirements have changed over the years. One of the biggest changes in 2014-15 is the switch from the state-mandated Standards Based Assessment (SBA) to the PARCC Assessment (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers). PARCC will be given to students in grades 3-11 in March (freshmen didn't have to take the SBA). PARCC also serves as one of the high school exit exams. APS has a website HERE with up to date details.

Parents be sure to attend your son or daughter's Open House Event for more details.

Start of the Year quick Message from Dr. Stanton

Welcome you to School Year 2015, celebrating our 5th year and second in a row as an “A” School from PED! Thank you for a great turnout and your patience at our Registration on Friday. As you can tell, we are getting bigger and I apologize for the longer lines. We’ll do better next year. We are full in 9th and 10th grade, but we do have a few open seats in grades 11 and 12. If you have family, friends, or acquaintances looking for a super school to better serve their college and career goals, please have them call me for a meeting and application. Remember, school starts Wednesday with a C Day. We would like all students that may have late arrival to come at 7:30am. We will have a start of the year celebration assembly. Finally, parents, please be sure to join us for our nex+Gen Community Organization planning meeting for this year on Tuesday, August 19th at 6pm – not the 12th as earlier announced. I will have a busy week to get ready for all of you! As always, please keep an eye on our website, our mobile APP, Twitter, and Facebook or just call or email to find out all the great things happening at nex+Gen Academy.

Thank You nex+Gen Volunteers

nex+Gen offers a unique approach to learning with PBL and our many special programs, clubs, and other after school activities.  These activities and programs depend upon our wonderful parent and community volunteers for support.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parent volunteers for the many hours you have logged in at nex+Gen.  Your support with registration, front desk duties, field trips, after school clubs, open houses and evening events, Research Challenge, numerous food and admin. donations, etc., is why nex+Gen is able to offer this incredible learning environment.

We have just completed our final volunteer hours report to APS.  nex+Gen reported a total of 82 Parent Volunteers who contributed over 650 hours, and 77 Community Volunteers who contributed over 250 hours for the current school year.

This year several of you attended our parent action team meetings and initiated and followed through on numerous activities and events; we thank you all for taking these projects on.  If you are interested in organizing and implementing a specific parent action group or a student activity next year, please plan to attend our Parent Action Team Meetings over the summer and next fall. You can also look for opportunities to help nex+Gen by checking the school website and calendar, facebook, emails, and phone calls from Dr. Stanton.

Thanks again for all that you do for nex+Gen. The 900 hours of documented volunteer time contributed to Nex+Gen this past school year would be valued at $20,169.00

Have a wonderful summer break and we look forward to working with you next school year.

Graduation Day @nex+gen

Hello nex+Gen families, this is Dr. Stanton with a couple very important announcements. First, Happy Mothers day weekend to all our nex+Gen mom’s. Thanks for all you do for your children and our learning community. I need to remind you that our Second Graduation and first for students that attended all four years with us, is this Monday at 1:30pm. Because of this early time, the first in all of APS, we will dismiss for lunch at 12 noon.  All students must be picked up or go home by 12:30. Unfortunately the Del Norte buses will run at their normal time. Since my entire staff is participating in the graduation ceremony, I have no one available to supervise children. Everyone therefore must go home by 12:30. I am sorry if this causes any inconvenience. As we wind down our school year, this will be our last full week of classes. Finals will be next Tuesday and Wednesday, the 20th and 21st. I appreciate you helping focus your learner on finishing up strong, doing their best on their final projects, presentations, and exams.

Graduation Details

Hello nex+Gen graduating seniors and families. I have a few announcements and details regarding Monday’s graduation. I apologize if these details are coming to you for the first time at the last minute. I know all of us have been working hard on senior finals, RadGrad, and Senior Honors Assembly. Graduation is at 1:30 on Monday. Students must be at the Disney Theater at the Hispanic Cultural Center, Bridge and 8th St by 11:45, and all dressed up. They will go directly to dressing rooms where they can do last minute hair and make-up if needed before we rehearse our graduation ceremony. The less they bring to the ceremony, the better. The doors to the theater will open at 1pm, with no reserved seating. We did give out all of the tickets. Please know that no food or flowers are allowed in the Theater. We have a place to hold flowers for you until after the ceremony which should be about an hour long. There will be a professional photographer on the stage and we will film the entire ceremony for you. Look for details after the ceremony on our website on how to get the pictures and view the video. I look forward to a wonderful ceremony especially after an outstanding Honors Assembly Friday. I’m very proud of each of my graduating seniors, the first nex+Gen class to attend all four years! Please call me at 252-0127 if you have any questions or concerns. And, it being the Mother’s Day weekend, please reach out to your classmates to be sure they all receive this message. I will post this on our website as well and try to email.

Does Your Child Have Perfect Attendance?

The Albuquerque New Car & Truck Dealers Association has decided to make four cash awards this year instead of awarding just a single car to a high school student with perfect attendance this year.

The cash awards will be as follows:
$3,000 given to one Senior;
$3,000 given to one Junior;
$3,000 given to one Sophomore; and
$3,000 given to one Freshman.

Dr. Stanton will be requesting the attendance information from SIS this week and letters will go out to the students who qualify in the next two weeks. The letters will let them know they have qualified for the drawing by having perfect attendance this year and need to be present to win. As in past years, a sophomore, junior or senior who has had more than one year of perfect attendance while in high school will have more than one chance to win the cash.

The drawing for the cash awards will be held Friday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at Del Norte High School.

Within 24 business hours, the student's summer school paperwork (summer schedule, and payment voucher)  will be returned to the student to take home to parents. Students will be required to call parent and let them know they received the summer school registration paperwork.

Do not lose this paperwork, it is needed for payment eligibility at any New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union where summer school payment is required .  Payment is due prior to first day of Summer school or student will lose their spot.

Summer school classes fill up fast and can not be guaranteed.  Sign up is on a first come first serve basis.

FYI, any students needing Physics recovery, please note there are only two classes offered this summer during term one for physics S1 and during term two for physics S2. One class will be at La Cueva and the other at Rio Grande.  This class will more than likely fill up by the first week.

End of Course Exams at nex+Gen Academy

Students must demonstrate competency in five subject areas in order to graduate high school. This attached document, although complex, illustrates the important part the EoC's play in your child's graduation. For example, in Social Studies in order to graduate, the primary demonstration of competence is the EoC exam in junior year in American History (last year all but 3 of our students passed). Those that fail must re-take that exam in fall of 12th grade. If they fail that test, then we can begin to look at Alternate Demonstration of Competency which would be the World History EoC from the 10th grade year. Same is true for Writing.

Another key element of the EoC testing programs handed to us from the State is that my teacher's Evaluation is tied to student performance on these assessments. We need good students like Sarah to take the exams so that the good work we are doing at nex+Gen Academy in teaching and learning is evident in these current accountability measures. Last year, in Chemistry, nex+Gen students did far better than the APS average.

Finally, the data from these assessments are being used by our facilitators to improve even further our projects and problems we use in our unique teaching and learning model here at nex+Gen Academy.

Attached here is the schedule for testing at nex+Gen Academy this week to facilitate each of the End of Course Exams the State has us giving. We appreciate all your support.

Nex+Gen Receives Direct Legislative Appropriations!

nex+Gen received a very generous and much needed $50,000 award from the recent State Legislative Session. We want to celebrate and thank our nex+Gen Legislators Sen. Daniel A. Ivey-Soto and Rep. Christine Trujillo. The money will be used to purchase much-needed additional technology to support our PARCC testing and enrich our Computer Graphics, Digital Media, and Computer Programming courses!

We plan to celebrate and recognize their support of education and nex+Gen at our Spring Parent and Community Pot-luck, so please plan to attend.

Please join us for Senior Project Presentations at nex+Gen, April 10th at 6pm

One of the unique characteristics of nex+Gen is our requirement that Seniors engage in a year-long project of their own choosing.  The project can be about almost anything, but it has some specific requirements: it must have an academic component; a product of some sort must emerge from it; students must seek out and find an adult mentor for feedback and guidance; students must present their journey at the end of the year.

For the last requirement of a presentation, we wish to elevate student performance, and legitimize their work by having them present not to their teachers, but to community members, who can objectively assess the merit of the work.     We would like to invite you come and observe these wonderful, hard working seniors of nex+Gen Academy, or to serve on a panel to assess the projects and presentations.

We provide the guidelines for assessment.   Presentations are 20 minutes long, with 10 minutes for questions afterward.   We ask that presenters observe 3 different students. This is truly a remarkable and at times inspirational evening for our community.

If you would like to be on a panel to help assess these presentation and projects, please call or email Dr. Stanton, Principal, at 878-6418 or michael.stanton@nexgenacademy.com

New Electives and Enhanced Courses Planned for 10th and 11th Grade Next Year

nex+Gen Academy proudly announces exciting changes and enhancements to our course offerings during 5th period next year. We have designed and are ready to implement in SY2015, 4 new elective courses and 4 improved courses for 10th and 11th grade next year. Nex+Gen leaders and facilitators have been listening to feedback from parents and especially students about offering more choices in our college and career ready program of study.  As a result, our entire staff worked hard the past 60 days to develop a very exciting improvement to our school. We are kicking off our new electives this week with presentations, workshops and surveys. Students will decide very soon if they would want their 5th period next year to be:

  • Future Problem Solving: Solve real world engineering problems, compete in Robotics or MESA competitions, and find solutions to problems using mathematical and scientific problem solving.
  • Computer Science for All: Use computer modeling and programming to solve real-world problems, work with computer science and engineering development methods, earn Dual Credit at UNM and compete in the SuperComputing Challenge.
  • Creative Writing and Dramatic Arts: This combination class for writing and performance will have students choose an area of focus yet develop both skills for the stage and for film, as well as Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, and Poetry.
  • Say it With Imagery: Explores various ways and reasons for using illustrations (using materials to clarify, explain or decorate text) to communicate ideas.  Students will learn to improve drawing ability, techniques and processes of commercial art (sellable art for advertisements, book illustrations, etc.), interpretations of ideas and how to visually represent ideas all collected. Student work will be developed and refined in a sketchbook along with writing about and creating finished artistic illustrations using a variety of media.
  • Student leadership: The culture of our school IS the project. Students plan assemblies, dances, spirit weeks, and many other activities around the school. They will organize and develop community service events to help others and also buid their resume.
  • Careers & Academic Planning for Sophomores: Students explore their personality & learning style, learn to better organize their time and workload, grow their mindset, set realistic goals and map their future. Other skills developed are to better use advanced communication and test-taking skills while exploring careers that match their interests and personality.
  • Academic and Career Exploration for Juniors: Helps learners plan an educational program consistent with their interests and abilities for high school and beyond as they better understand their unique abilities, interests, and aptitudes. Students will receive up-to-date occupational information and other labor market data, and become acquainted with a wide range of occupational and educational opportunities.
  • Guided Study for learners with Gifted IEPs: Engages students in a discovery of what it means to be gifted, what is intelligence and how to develop Habits of Mind to become a successful life long learner.  Learners will develop organizational skills, self-reflection skills, personal and academic goals to pursue area of individual interest and passion. Through a series of personality/aptitude tests and facilitator guided projects learners will develop an understanding of what careers are most suited for them and how to create a personal plan to achieve career goals. 11th grade learners will continue their self-exploration through self guided projects leading to a mentorship and dual credit experience to support personal and academic goals.

12th graders next year will have the Ultimate Elective – Senior Project in which learners choose a topic they are passionate about and develop a year long personal inquiry complete with a mentor/advisor and culminating project presentation.

Each of these elective courses will contribute to a college ready transcript and resume while providing students the opportunity to develop their passions, interests, and specific skills that jump start careers.

FAFSA Completion Workshops Scheduled February 12th in our Cyber Hall at 6:30pm

What IS the FAFSA? The acronym stands for "Free Application for Federal Student Aid".  It is an application form to obtain grants ($ you do not have to repay), work-study jobs, and student loans from the government. This year's maximum Pell Grant  may be +/-$5,600 for students with family incomes up to $24,000; awards of lessor amounts are made on a sliding scale as family income goes higher.  The aid can be used to cover  college-related expenses; it is based on financial need.  Colleges and states also use FAFSA information to award additional non-federal aid, so you will want to send your FAFSA to all schools you are considering attending.  After you apply (either online or with a paper form), you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) that tells how much your family is expected to contribute (EFC) and the amount of your expected award.  The college financial aid office sets up an account in the student's name and administers the funds.

FAFSA Completion Workshops Scheduled Current high school seniors can start filling out the 2014-15 application starting January 1, 2014.  Most colleges and universities have a priority deadline of March 1 to receive your completed FAFSA. This means you need to submit your online FAFSA by approximately February 21 to have them receive the completed packet by March 1. Having your college/university receive your completed application by the priority deadline will allow you to be considered for all types of aid that they offer.  You can still apply after March 1 but some of the limited aid may have already been awarded.

Please know that some colleges are requiring students to have a completed FAFSA on file to receive scholarships, even if the family does not qualify for federal aid.  For instance, NMSU and CNM require all students to have a completed FAFSA on file to receive the Bridge to Success Scholarship or the Opportunity  (Lottery) Scholarship.  Apply so you don’t miss out on these free money opportunities!

Filling out the FAFSA has become much easier than it was years ago but for some families the process is still very daunting. Ms. Traylor, DNHS College and Career Counselor, has been trained by the Department of Education to help our families with the FAFSA process. She will be available during the following times to assist seniors and their parents with completing the FAFSA application for federal student aid.

12th Week Report Cards

Tuesday, is the end of the 12th week Grading Period. Usually we try to get report cards out to you in a timely manner, but this time the soonest we can get the APS version of the Report out will be late next week. So, we are doing something new this time, and it may even work better. Friday morning I will print out a new report that our Echo System can now generate that gives the same information on grades for each class as of Thursday as well as student progress on our School Wide Learning Outcomes. That way, you won’t have to wait to see where your learner stands. Remember, that the Final Semester Grade from December 20th is the one that goes in the permanent record and transcript for graduation and college. In the meantime, we have plenty of tutoring opportunities in Math and lots of support after school in our STARs program for students to get the help they need. Our Facilitators and I can be available for questions and concerns as well as other support for the success of your learner. So, be sure to ask your student to see their New Student Report from Echo when they come home this Friday.

Whether you’re learner is planning on college, a technical school, or  just not sure yet, the ASVAB Career Exploration Program can provide them with important information about their skills, abilities and interests – and help put them on the right course for a satisfying career experience at nex+Gen Academy and beyond.

Students can sign up and take the Assessment on the 29th during school day. There will be no access or calls from military recruiters if not interested, but the information has proven to be very helpful for our students not sure what they want to do beyond high school.

Contact Mrs. Becker for more information or to sign up you student for this free assessment.

We encourage you to attend this informative meeting to get a better understanding of testing requirements as your child progresses through school. Meetings are from 6:30-8 on the following dates:

Welcome back and Message from Dr. Stanton

Dear nex+Gen Family and Friends,

Welcome back to school!  For the nearly 150 families new to nex+Gen, a special welcome is in order to our unique, award winning school.  I look forward to a wonderful new year of continued growth, development, and success for all members of our Learning Community as we prepare your children for college and career.

As we begin just our fourth year, it is good to look back and celebrate our successes. We have many highlights over the past three years.  We recently were named for the second year an Exemplary School in the New Tech Network.  We earned Full Accreditation Status through AdvanceEd and North Central Association, after meeting a rigorous set of international standards for a successful school.  We earned an “A” on our school report card from the State Public Education Department in June.  I am proud of the fact that we scored exceptionally well in Student Growth of our Highest and our Lowest Performing Students on last Spring’s rigorous assessments.  We made tremendous gains in how our students performed on standardized tests and on how well they met targets for their grade level. Our students consistently scored from 10 to 20 percentage points higher than the APS District average in Math, Reading, and Science.

However, we don’t just measure success at nex+Gen by test scores. We believe that when students are engaged in effective, wall-to-wall project and problem based learning, in a teaching and learning system with high expectations for all learners, while providing effective supports in a technology rich environment, our students will perform as well or better than their peers. We proved that hypothesis true and our students delivered much more.  Nearly 75% of this year’s Senior Class successfully completed a mentorship experience as well as passing a dual credit college class at CNM.  One of our projects, The Moth Storytelling Event, was one of three finalists for the Best in Network award in our New Tech Network, a Partnership with over 120 schools.  That’s thousands of projects!

Looking at where we are today, we have our first freshman class coming in at our maximum; with nearly 330 students we are nearly at capacity! Many of our new students learned about our school through friends and acquaintances. That means so much to us.  Our teaching staff, our Facilitators, return to official work this week with some new faces and a summer of continued professional development, reflection, and conferences.  Please welcome Mr. Jeffrey Smolensky, our new partner teacher with Ms. Floyd in Integrative Biology. Dr. Ryil Adamson comes to us from a list of a dozen highly qualified applicants for our special education position to work with Ms. Djordjevic.  Ms. Caitlin Reece will take over the English partnership in American Studies from her mother, Ms. Amy Reece while she moves to 12th grade to teach English, Economics, and Geography in Human Environmental Systems.  Mr. Ford Davis will be our new Technology Coordinator and already has us organized and ready for the start of school with the special help in transition this summer from Mr. Steele and Mr. Learmonth, co-tech coordinators last year.  Finally, we are looking forward to have you meet three wonderful young college students who were selected from a list of 15 from UNM College of Education to have their student teaching practicum here at nex+Gen this school year.

As we look to this year, our professional learning community of teachers, volunteers, and business/community partners at nex+Gen Academy are focused on taking our school to the next level.  We are upgrading our School Wide Learning Outcomes to develop deeper and richer learning throughout our projects and problems: Agency, Communications, Inquiry and Analysis, and Collaboration. You will learn much more this Fall about these key skills for student success for high school and success in college and career.  We are committed to developing our school culture and community further through additional activities, clubs, and organizations.  Look for details on our new Math, Engineering, Science Achievement Club sponsored by Mr. Buck and Ms. Calabrese. Mr. Gant will sponsor Robotics Club.  Mr. Montroy, a parent volunteer, will sponsor Archery.  And, we have much more ahead.  Mr. Davis and several parent volunteers will sponsor our nex+Gen Student Store.

Finally, you will hear more from your facilitators and learners about developing a “Growth Mindset.”  Our staff is studying Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck who believes that with the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades and accomplish much more. Her simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area of life.

In conclusion, I look forward to the year ahead, having reflected in the quiet moments of this summer of what we have accomplished in just 3 short years.  Our Senior Class of 2014 is our first to have attended all four years! I will do my very best for our nex+Gen Academy learning community as we go to the next level of developing our school.  Please be sure to check-in our website on a regular basis for news, notes, and events on our calendar.  Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.  Consider becoming even more actively involved in our Parent and Community Partnership Organization. And, be sure to call or email with any questions, concerns, and good ideas to better develop and grow our school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Stanton,

Director and Principal, nex+Gen Academy

Nex+Gen Academy Gets an "A" from the State

Nex+Gen officially Fully Accredtex by AdvanceEd!
Congratulations to Nex+gen Academy for the successful completion of the 2012-2013 AdvancED External Review and the achievement of Accreditation.  Effective 2012-2013 the institution’s Accreditation Status is based on the average of all indicator ratings given by the External Review Team.  Below is information about each Accreditation Status:

Accredited: The institution scored high enough on all Standards and Indicators to warrant no concerns from the external team. Even with this rating, however, AdvancED has always asked external teams to assign “required actions” that the institution must work on for continuous improvement. Prior to 2012, this designation was assigned if all seven Standards were rated as Operational or above. Effective 2012-2013, this status was assigned to institutions with Indicator scores that were primarily at or above the performance level of three, which aligns with the earlier label of “Operational.” Institutions given this designation have two years to address Required Actions.

Accredited On Advisement:  This designation indicates that the external team found the institution performing well in most areas, with a few minor concerns related to the Standards that should be addressed within two years. Prior to 2012, this designation was assigned if any one or more of the seven Standards were rated as Emerging and the remainder were Operational or above. Effective 2012-2013, this status was assigned to institutions with Indicator scores that primarily were somewhat below the performance level of three, which aligns with the earlier label of “Emerging.” Institutions given this designation have two years to address Required Actions.

Accredited Warned: This designation indicates that the external team had several concerns with areas related to the Standards, and possibly other minor concerns. AdvancED expects these concerns to be addressed within two years. Prior to 2012, this designation was assigned if any one of the seven Standards were rated as Not Evident and the remainder were Emerging or above. Effective 2012-2013, this status was assigned to institutions with Indicator scores that were primarily at the performance level of two and slightly above, which also aligns with the earlier label of “Emerging.” Institutions given this designation have two years to address Required Actions.

Accredited Probation:  This designation indicates that the external team had serious concerns with areas related to the Standards, and possibly other concerns. Prior to 2012, this designation was assigned if any two or more of the seven Standards were rated as Not Evident and the remainder were Emerging or above. Effective 2012-2013, this status was assigned to institutions with Indicator scores that were primarily at the performance level of two and below, which aligns with the earlier label of “Not Evident.” Institutions given this designation must host an on-site Accreditation Progress Review (APR) within one year and demonstrate progress on the Required Actions.

As a result of the External Review and the team’s ratings of the Indicators nex+Gen Academy has been awarded the status of Accredited. The results of this process are not arbitrary or punitive but provide a more precise assessment of an institution’s status in the ongoing process of continuous improvement. The Indicator performance levels provide your institution with a roadmap as you continue your journey of continuous improvement to provide students with the best possible educational experiences.

Sincerely,

Priscilla Fernandez

Nex+Gen Academy Earns NCA CASI Accreditation!

(Albuquerque, NM 3/27/13) – Principal Dr. Michael Stanton announced today that nex+Gen Academy earned accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED. This action was taken at the AdvancED Accreditation Commission meeting held in March 2013.

NCA CASI provides nationally-recognized accreditation, the purpose of which is continuous school improvement focused on increasing student performance. To earn accreditation, schools must meet NCA CASI’s high standards, be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school and implement a continuous process of school improvement.

“Accreditation demonstrates to our students, parents and community that we are focused on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation staffed by highly qualified educators,” stated Principal Stanton.

NCA CASI accreditation is recognized across state lines, which not only eases the transfer process as students move from accredited school to accredited school but also assures parents that the school is meeting nationally accepted standards for quality and successful professional practice.

Dr. Mark Elgart, President/CEO of AdvancED, the parent organization of NCA CASI, stated, “NCA CASI Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners. nex+Gen Academy is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.”

Parents and interested community members can learn more about accreditation at www.advanc-ed.org

“It Can Wait” Simulator Media Event with AT&T at nex+Gen -Recap

January 30th, 2013 Nex+Gen Academy, Albuquerque

About 300 students attended the “It Can Wait” simulator media event at Nex+Gen Academy, a school of choice located on the Del Norte High School campus in Albuquerque, NM on January 30th, 2013.

The students had a terrific experience whether they tried their hand at the simulator or cheering their friends on.  Peer to peer interaction is key to helping them retain the message that texting and driving is dangerous.

See attached media recap document for more.

When it comes to texting and driving, IT CAN WAIT.

That is the simple, yet vital message AT&T is sending drivers, particularly teens. To drive home the message and to make our roads and highways safer, AT&T is bringing a virtual reality simulator to Nex+Gen to let high school students experience first-hand the dangers of texting and driving.

Come test your texting skills, and see how your friends fare, in a car outfitted with a virtual reality simulator that replicates real life driving distractions

Wednesday January 30th in the Great Hall from 11:00 – 12:45.

The simulator is part of AT&T’s It Can Wait campaign, which seeks to educate students about the dangers of texting while driving and urges drivers to take the pledge at ItCanWait.com. No text is worth dying for – It Can Wait.

Key Facts:

·         More than 100,000 times each year, an automobile crashes leaving people injured or dead as a result of a driver texting and driving. (National Safety Council)

·         Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be in an accident. (VTTI)

·         75 percent of teens surveyed said texting while driving is “common” among their friends. (AT&T Wireless Survey)

Please join us for The Moth Inspired Storytelling Event at nex+Gen Academy

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. It is a celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. The Humanities Facilitators of nex+Gen Academy are implementing a school-wide project based on The Moth Storytelling program. Our learners, all 250 of our students, have been working on a variety of activities at the start of this new semester leading to a performance on January 25th at 6:30pm.  At the center of each performance isthe story – and our Facilitators have been working with each storyteller to find, shape and present it.

We will also need community support and participation as an audience in this unique celebratory literacy event! We need an audience - please plan to come with your friends and family to share in what I'm sure will be a wonderful evening. The culminating event, our Moth Inspired Show, begins at 6:30pm on the 25th.  Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience. Moth stories dissolve socio-economic barriers, expose vulnerabilities, and quietly suggest ways to overcome challenges and see with new eyes.

As you know every big celebratory nex+Gen event must have food! In this case, we mean desserts.  So, I ask for a potluck dessert event for The Moth.

  • Families with last name A - K, please bring drinks (fruit drink, lots of water, sodas) I'll bring coffee
  • Families with last name L - P, please bring desserts (lots of cookies!)
  • Families with last name Q - Z, please bring, plates, cups, plasticware or napkins

The Moth Inspired event is coming to nex+Gen Academy: please help us!

Our school has a strong emphasis on literacy and creativity and have a school wide project that could use your help.  We are planning a Moth Inspired event on Friday, January 25th.

Our learners, all 250 of our students, will be working on a variety of activities at the start of this new semester leading to a performance on January 25th.  At the center of each performance is the story – and our Facilitators will work with each storyteller to find, shape and present it. They need your help, however.  We are looking for members of our community to work with our students the next two weeks working with small groups of our young, aspiring storytellers craft their stories.  We ask you to consider sharing an invitation within your membership to support us by spending all or part of a day sharing your creativity, expertise, and support to our students under the guidance of our teacher/facilitators. Please call or email me if you are able to volunteer.

We will also need community support and participation on Friday January the 25th all day and/or into the evening to help judge our stories.  In essence, we will have 250 students telling their stories! We need lots of folks to serve on panels to help judge, critique, and give feedback. The culminating event will be our Moth Inspired Show at 6:30pm on the 25th.

We appreciate your time and consideration to help and participate in this unique learning experience at nex+Gen Academy!
Sincerely,

The NCA/AdvancEd site visit team completed their visit today and recommended nex+Gen Academy to be named fully accredited. This is a huge accomplishment for us and is the top designation a school can receive! In the report out today it was especially our teaching and learning, our professional learning community and our culture that stood out to the team. We will get the official commendation in January. PLAN Test - Pre-ACT Exam scheduled for Nov 14th

#next_pages_container { width: 5px; hight: 5px; position: absolute; top: -100px; left: -100px; z-index: 2147483647 !important; }

The PLAN is the pre-ACT exam specifically designed for sophomores. This test is being offered during the school day at Del Norte High School on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, starting at 7:30 AM (ending approx. 11). Students who choose to take the exam (it is optional, but highly recommended for college-bound students*) will receive a Griffin Absence (excused absence). The Plan exam is only given once a year, and only to 10th graders who sign up for it.

Registration for the PLAN has already begun and will continue through next week: Monday, Nov. 12th.  Students may register during advisory, lunchtime, or after school (2:30 - 3 PM) with Mrs. Becker in Counseling. The cost of the exam is $13, payable by cash (exact change, please) or check/money order payable to NGA - PLAN. (Students on free or reduced lunch may ask Mrs. Becker for a reduced fee waiver form, dropping the cost to $5.) There is no permission slip necessary for this exam.

Reasons to take the PLAN:

The majority of NM students take the ACT during Junior and/or Senior year as their college entrance exam. Taking the PLAN will help prepare them for the ACT. It covers the same subjects - English, math, reading, science - and gives students an estimated ACT score:

Students who take the PLAN tend to score higher on the ACT than those who don't

PLAN lets students know if they're on track for college, and connects them with colleges and careers (through a career inventory) that match their interests

PLAN points out academic strengths as well as areas in which students need to improve.

If you would like more information about the PLAN, and if your student would like to check out sample test questions, visit:
www.planstudent.org. Also see www.actstudent.org. If you have questions, please contact me directly.
 Thank you,

Help needed to plan a new Math Club

At last night's meeting, we agreed to not use MineCraft as a realistic tool for our goals.  Instead we want to investigate possible resources and existing competitions, tools, and events, that could drive a real Math Club especially hands-on and for more reluctant learners in math to increase engagement.  Would Mr. Losinski and Ms.Toon consider arranging a meeting to problem solve and investigate further for possible Semester 2 implementation?  Your thoughts?

PSAT (preliminary SAT) on October 17th @nex+Gen Academy

Please note that all 10th graders will be taking the PSAT (preliminary SAT) on October 17th, which is paid for by the state.  Sophomores who take the PSAT enter into the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Students will want to try their best on this test so we ask that students eat breakfast and get a good night’s sleep the night before.

Juniors are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to sign up and take the PSAT which will be given on October 17th as well.  Students took this test last year and State funds paid for that test.  As a junior, qualifying PSAT scores officially count toward the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Students may begin signing up with Mrs. Becker beginning the week of September 17th.  We have a grant that will pay for the first 20 students who sign up.  Otherwise, the cost is $14.  Please make checks payable to NGA PSAT.

The PLAN (practice ACT) Test will be given November 14th.  Registration will be the last week in October and students can sign up with Mrs. Becker.

nex+Gen Parents: Be sure to access our on-line learning management system, Echo

To be able to better work together with all of us and to support your student this year.  I suggest you check in daily if you are new to our learning community so as to better learn about what your student did during the day and to see if they are staying up on deadlines for assignments, and keeping their grades up to date.  In addition, you can see many details of the wonderful projects and problems they are working on in class.  You can get strait answers to "what did you do in school today?"  If you forgot your login and password or are a brand new parent or family member, simply send me an email and we'll correct that for you. Be sure to give me your child's name.  The best way for new folks to access Echo and learn how to use it, is to start at our portal on our website nexgen.aps.edu. Search “Echo” on the Home page.

nex+Gen Academy is partnering with New Options of NM and Innovate-Educate to provide an ground-breaking and relevant program to help our students become even more college and career ready!

The Partnership will provide free access to Career Ready 101 from ACT, Inc to 11th grade learners at nex+Gen Academy. Career Ready 101 is a comprehensive career-training course. It is an integrated approach to exploring careers and their skill requirements, building workplace skills using KeyTrain remediation, and creating life-literacy with such skills as financial awareness and job searching. Our students will be accessing the curriculum and the resources during their Advisory/Academic and Career Experience Class (5th period).  Then, in the wintertime they will be formally assessed in WorkKeys from ACT, Inc.  WorkKeys helps ensure that individuals are ready for work—and for life. If students are going to be adequately prepared for the workforce, they need to understand the requirements for jobs they are considering. WorkKeys helps students determine the skill levels required for various jobs.

As part of the Partnership, our nex+Gen students will be participants in a regional research project that could help many other high school students in New Mexico. This research study is about how students can learn workplace skills to make education more relevant while increasing student employability.  It is expected that over 900 students from Albuquerque, Doña Ana County, and Santa Fe will participate in this study.  Nearly 10% will come from nex+Gen Academy.

New Tech Network schools create great learning environments that lead to great student results. We believe that relevant and rigorous instruction, a student-centered school culture and an integrated use of technology will lead to students prepared to succeed in college and career.

Take a look at the attached report by our School Partnership Organization for last school year, which was nex+Gen Academy's first.  Although, nex+Gen Academy is still in its second year and does not have some of the data to report yet, the expectation is that we should meet these high marks and beyond because of our fidelity to the model and our recent recognition as an Exemplary School within the New Tech Network.

Three nex+Gen Academy Students Receive Student Achievement Award

prize_winner.pngThree nex+Gen Academy students received the “New Mexico Student Achievement Award” from the New Mexico ACT Council for their performance on the PLAN (the Pre-ACT) Assessment.  These students are on target to meet or exceed ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks by graduation.  ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks are empirically-based and identify the level of achievement necessary in English, mathematics, reading and science to have a successful college freshman experience.

The students receiving this recognition from the New Mexico ACT Council are:

Hannah Couse, Sarah Hanz, and Deslyn Turrieta

The New Mexico ACT Council is made up of secondary and postsecondary educators who advise ACT, Inc. on the utilization of ACT programs and services in New Mexico schools and colleges.  ACT, Inc. is the not-for-profit organization that provides assessment, research, information and program management services in the broad areas of education and workforce development and the publisher of the ACT Assessment.  The ACT Assessment is the college admissions test that is accepted by all colleges nationwide.

According to Karen Pennell, ACT Assistant Vice President and Southwest Regional Manager, “The New Mexico ACT Council recognizes those students who are making significant strides to prepare themselves for college by taking rigorous courses and meeting the PLAN (Pre-ACT) College Readiness Benchmarks.   We also want to recognize that student PLAN (Pre-ACT) achievement is the result of a strong commitment by nex+Gen Academy teachers, staff, administrators and parents to increase college readiness for all students.”

Nex+Gen Selected as National Demonstration Site

[Albuquerque, N.M.] – Albuquerque Public Schools nex+Gen Academy has been selected as a National Demonstration Site in the New Tech Network for epitomizing the New Tech mission of helping students gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life, college and the careers of tomorrow.

The New Tech Network is a development organization that supports the start-up and implementation of innovative high schools marked by project-based learning in a technology-rich environment. Nex+Gen is one of 87 New Tech schools nationwide in 16 states.

As a demonstration school, nex+Gen will play a key role in the expansion of the New Tech Network. Nex+Gen will host tours for interested national, state and local schools that want to see a New Tech school firsthand. Visitors will take part in student-led tours to learn about the fundamentals of the school, including showcasing exemplary project-based learning, integrated use of technology and unique aspects of the school culture.

In addition, demonstration sites host national and regional New Tech training events for teachers and administrators.

“Being named a demonstration school by the New Tech Network is affirmation that nex+Gen is accomplishing its goal to be like nothing this community has seen – a school centered on project-based learning that uses technology and investigation to engage students in topics relevant to their lives,” said APS Superintendent Winston Brooks. “Congratulations to Principal Mike Stanton and the staff and students at nex+Gen on their success, which is earning national recognition.”

To receive the distinction of a National Demonstration Site, nex+Gen achieved many notable accomplishments including developing a clear set of student learning outcomes consistent with skills required to succeed in college or career. In addition, all courses must demonstrate rigorous and relevant project-based learning; technology integration must be present in all classrooms; and the school needs to create a culture that establishes students at the center, built on trust, respect and responsibility.

Nex+Gen opened in 2009 with its first class of freshmen and sophomores. The school, located behind Del Norte High, is now in its third year and is recruiting students for the 2012-2013 school year. The next open house for interested students will be held today, Tuesday, April 10, from 6:30-8 p.m. The school is located at 5325 Montgomery Blvd. NE right behind Del Norte High School.

“When we opened nex+Gen Academy, we were challenged to re-imagine teaching and learning,” said Principal Dr. Michael Stanton. “We have seen amazing examples of engaged students. It is evident through our hard work that our students are being better prepared for life and college.”

“Demonstration schools are exemplary schools within the New Tech Network. Each school has shown enormous dedication and creativity all centered around providing students with the learning experiences essential to successful post-secondary paths. These students will graduate prepared for college and career options,” said New Tech Network President Lydia Dobyns.
